About this place
Oakland was founded in 1850, which makes it Atlanta's oldest public burial ground, and it grew into a 48-acre Victorian garden cemetery: mausoleums, stained glass and statuary under oaks and magnolias, in the garden cemetery style of Mount Auburn. The Historic Oakland Foundation cares for it in partnership with the city.
The famous graves reward the walk: Margaret Mitchell, Bobby Jones, Civil War soldiers in their thousands, and the names on half the street signs of modern Atlanta. Guided tours run mainly at weekends and tell the stories properly; the self-guided map from the Bell Tower visitor centre does the rest.
Tickets and booking
There is no single ticket to book. The grounds are free to walk. Guided tours and the self-guided tour map are paid, from the Visitors Center in the Bell Tower. The official site carries the latest visitor information.
