About this place
Zoo Atlanta began in 1889, when a bankrupt travelling circus was bought at auction and its animals donated to the city; it has stood in Grant Park ever since, which makes it Atlanta's oldest cultural institution. The Zoo now holds more than 1,000 animals in the park's mature tree canopy.
The African Savanna and the gorilla and elephant habitats carry the day, and the setting does half the work: this is a zoo inside one of the city's oldest parks, a short ride southeast of downtown. It closes only two days a year, and the last entry is well before closing, so morning visits run best.
