About this place
Stone Mountain is the day trip: a giant dome of exposed granite rising out of the woods about half an hour east of Atlanta, wrapped in 3,200 acres of park. Explore Georgia calls it the state's most visited attraction. The mountain's north face carries the largest high-relief carving in the world, of the Confederate leaders Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson, a Civil War memorial whose history the park's exhibits take on directly.
The summit is the point: ride the Summit Skyride cable car up, or walk the steep walk-up trail, for the view back to the Atlanta skyline.
